Aramiska satellite closes service

Document Actions
Today saw the announcement that Aramiska satellite, who serve many rural businesses, community networks and WISPs, were to cease as of this evening.
A CBN Taskforce are developing a rescue package for the many that this affects over the weekend- more details on the CBN site.

ABC feels that this situation highlights ever further why the Notspot survey is of such import. There are many around the UK tonight who either have no Internet connection or are back to dial up - we know, we seem to have spoken to many today and some of our own are affected.

Although satellite may have its limitations, for many in the UK this is their only chance to get first generation 2Mbps broadband services for the foreseeable future.

The survey seeks to map all those areas where even first generation broadband is not available, and also to show where demand should be driving the UK into fibre connections and higher bandwidth next generation solutions that other countries now take for granted.
