Community Broadband Network

Community Broadband Network, helping to support those communities who need assistance.

Members of ABC have been contributing freely to the newly launched Community Broadband Network, helping to support those communities who need assistance with getting access to broadband, and in particular, gathering together all the regulatory issues to take to the appropriate bodies. We welcome the initiative and persuade anyone who hasn't already checked it out to take a look see at http://www.broadband-uk.coop

Launched at the ABC 2 Conference in January by government ministers Alun Michael and Stephen Timms, CBN has got off to a flying start. All over the country local communities are struggling to meet BT exchange trigger levels or working to create their own broadband provision. The CBN partnership offers an opportunity for getting support to those working to form local broadband co-ops and other forms of community enterprise.

The project has three broad aims:

  • To organise the ‘know-how’ - mentoring and expert support for local initiatives
  • To help community networks achieve sustainability by working together on common services
  • To ensure that community broadband is recognised as an important part of the picture by policy makers and funders.

Set up as a partnership between ruralnet|uk, The Phone Coop, and Alston Cybermoor. CBN has attracted over 160 people to the support extranet, and has more than 280 entries on the projects and programmes database on the website. Initial funding from the Countryside Agency means that CBN can offer a limited amount of free mentoring support to local communities who want to evaluate technical and social enterprise business solutions to broadband provision. The first Mentor Day in January attracted 60 participants from all over the UK.

Meanwhile the co-operative sector has got involved by providing funding to CBN through the Co-operative Action fund and by developing new model rules designed specifically for local broadband co-ops. Other funding has been obtained from the DTI and DEFRA, and from Cisco.
