Wi-Fi, which stands for "Wireless Fidelity", is an increasing popular wireless "First Mile" technology using unlicensed spectrum. It was originally developed over ten years ago as a means of providing a Wireless Local Area Network for offices and homes to connect computers and to the Internet and had a very short range of only 30 metres.
