Satellite
Satellite "First Mile" technology is a recent addition to the capabilities of communications satellites. These have been traditionally used for carrying international voice and fax traffic, for broadcasting multimedia entertainment, education and news content, transmitting photos of the earth from space and acting as an alternative international Internet backbone link to underwater international fibre optic cables.
Broadband satellites are now capable of connecting earth bound subscribers to the Internet at high speeds, either as a one way download connection or as a two way download and upload connection. "First Mile" does not adequately describe the broadband connection since it is in fact thousands of miles in length, but it serves the same purpose as other wireless "First Mile" technologies. Satellite broadband is also used in conjunction with other "First Mile" technologies, both wired and wireless, for providing connectivity to the Internet as an intermediate link.
