Los Romanes, Malaga, Spain

Document Actions
RucaNet - a satellite/Mesh network out in the hills north of Malaga.

One under development (April/May 2004) following a heartfelt request from Spain to come and help! The area has grave difficulties getting even phone lines installed to the many ex-pats who live in this beautiful place, and of course they want to keep in touch with friends, family and business interests in the UK and elsewhere.

Following much emailing, and discussions over Skype (if you do not yet have Skype, take a good luck at your phone bill, and then download it! Free voice calls over the Internet Skype)

, the decision was made to install an Aramiska dish, and then for us to head out there with a baggage allowance of equipment to train and install. We will report back!

May 11th 2004

We have been out to Los Romanes, with a mere 80+kg of baggage on the plane, and installed a 5 Mesh node around the village and across Lake ViƱuela. Each node can also connect others using wireless bridges and antennas so this is a network that could support 50 users or more without too much difficulty. And all set up in a matter of 3 days.

We were staying above the bar in Los Romanes - cheers Miguel! - and of course top priority was reaching the apartment, which was achieved at the end of Day 2, and meant Joel could administer various UK networks from the balcony! It also meant that we could surf in the bar, which raised a few eyebrows as laptops and PDA's appeared with the tapas and cervezas.

Some of the distances required meant that we needed to use 16dbi panel antenna instead of the more usual 8 or 12 dbi omnis. However, we took out a 'selection box' of antenna so this was no problem. Panel antennas seem to be proving worth their weight in gold recently - better than omnis and Yagis in many instances, and cheap.

Photos will be added shortly to the photo gallery - watch this space!

We are just awaiting the domain registration and set-up, and Rucanet will then be found at RucaNet.net to watch their progress.
